Odd News-Man says he found dead shark in Lake Michigan

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - There's no telling what might turn up in Lake Michigan.

Rich Fasi of Traverse City says he found a dead 2-foot shark in the water while fishing on West Grand Traverse Bay on Wednesday.

The saltwater fish was a juvenile blacktip shark, said Mark Tonello, a fisheries biologist from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Tonello said someone might have caught the shark off the Atlantic Coast and kept it on ice while bringing it to northern Michigan.

Another possibility is that the dead shark was dumped by someone who had kept it as a pet, Tonello said.

EDGARTOWN, Mass. - The island where "Jaws" was filmed had a real-life shark scare Thursday, when an unconfirmed sighting of a great white forced the closure of two beaches.

South Beach on Martha's Vineyard was closed for a short time, and swimmers were kept out of the water at State Beach in Edgartown, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation said.

A plane was dispatched to try to confirm the sighting, but no shark was spotted, said Lisa Capone, a spokeswoman for the state Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.

In 1974, Steven Spielberg chose Martha's Vineyard for filming the movie version of "Jaws," depicting a series of deadly great white attacks in the fictional community of Amity.

Shark attacks are extremely rare in waters off New England, but great whites have been known to occasionally prowl in the region.

An Australian man is recovering in hospital after being attacked by a shark while swimming in far southwestern Australia.

Jason Cull said he saw a shadow under the surface of the water, but thought it was a dolphin.

When the shark pulled him under on Saturday by grabbing a leg, he fought for his life.

"I felt along it, I found its eye and I poked it in the eye, and that's when it let go," the 37-year-old told reporters from his hospital bed in Albany on Sunday.

Albany is about 400 kilometres southwest of Perth.

Tom Marron, a spokesman for local surf lifesavers, said the attack occurred at Middleton Beach.

Beachgoers noticed three sharks on Saturday, estimating their size at up to five metres. Marron suspected the shark that attacked Cull was a white pointer.

Volunteer lifesaver Joanne Lucas went into the water to rescue Cull, he said.

"She heard the cries and splashing and knew they needed assistance and just went straight in," Marron said.

"She got hold of the injured swimmer and brought him back to shore," he said. "There was a fairly comprehensive mauling of his left leg, lost a lot of his calf, severe lacerations."

The beach has been closed.

Australia experiences about 15 shark attacks per year in its waters, one of the highest rates in the world.

On average, however, just over one per year is fatal.

A 16-year-old surfer died in April after a shark attack on Australia's eastern coast.

This isn't funny, but it is amazing how shocked everyone gets when a wild animal attacks a human. Well lets see....Shark lives in the ocean and is the ultimate predator...man swims in ocean, he is at the bottom of the oceans food chain. Whether a human is in their environment or take the wild animal out of their natural habit, you can't predict an animals behavior 100% of the time. Hense the name " Wild Animal".

A man swimming in the ocean near Solana Beach was killed this morning by a shark, the Times' Molly-Hennessy-Fiske reports.

A man 55 to 60 years old was swimming with others at Tide Beach about 7 a.m. when he was attacked, according to a statement on the Solana Beach city website.

The man, whose identity was not immediately released, was taken to the Fletcher Cove Park lifeguard station for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead at the scene, the statement said.

Swimmers were ordered out of the water along a 17-mile stretch around the attack site, and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department sent up helicopters to scan the waters for the shark.

"The shark is still in the area. We're sure of that," Solana Beach Mayor Joe Kellejian told the Associated Press.
