Stupid News - Detroit mayor returns to court on 2nd bond issue

Stupid News - Detroit mayor returns to court on 2nd bond issue

Detroit mayor returns to court on 2nd bond issue
DETROIT - Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick returned to court Tuesday for a hearing to decide if he has violated his bail a second time.
District Court Judge Ronald Giles, who already has sent Kilpatrick to jail for one overnight stay, presided over the hearing on prosecutors' allegation that the mayor spent time during the weekend with his sister, a potential prosecution witness in his assault case.

The mayor appeared in court with his wife, Carlita.

Doug Baker of the Michigan attorney general's office said in a court filing that the mayor had been ordered to have no contact with witnesses, yet he and his sister were together Saturday at their mother's house.

Kilpatrick's defense team, however, denied the mayor was in trouble. Attorney Jim Thomas said Magistrate Renee McDuffee clarified Friday that Kilpatrick could have contact with his sister.

Kilpatrick is charged with assaulting two investigators who were trying to deliver a subpoena at his sister Ayanna Kilpatrick's house in July in a separate perjury case against him.

In a statement, Kilpatrick spokesman Marcus Reese accused state Attorney General Mike Cox, a Republican, of trying to score political points with the latest filing against the Democratic mayor.

Giles sent Kilpatrick to jail Thursday for violating his bond conditions in the perjury case. The mayor traveled to Windsor, Ontario, for city business July 23 without first notifying authorities.

Baker's filing asked the court to look at what happened and amend the terms of Kilpatrick's bond. The document doesn't mention any possible changes, and Baker left court without speaking to reporters.

Kilpatrick was released Friday after a higher court, acting on an appeal, set his bond at $50,000.

Baker referred to the perjury case by saying the mayor has "demonstrated an inability to adhere to reasonable bond conditions."

Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff, Christine Beatty, were charged in March with perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct in office. They will be arraigned Thursday in Wayne County Circuit Court.

Prosecutors say text messages contradict their denial of an affair, a key point in a trial involving a former deputy police chief who claimed he was illegally fired.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy confirmed published reports that she met last week with community leaders, who are encouraging her to end the perjury case with a plea bargain.

Worthy, who is an elected official, defended her attendance at the meeting, saying it was an opportunity to listen to constituents. She declined to comment on any deal with Kilpatrick.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm will preside over a trial-like hearing that starts Sept. 3 to decide whether to oust Kilpatrick. A spokeswoman for Kilpatrick said Monday night that the mayor won't testify at the hearing or at a separate city council proceeding on his removal.

CLAYTON, Mo. - Someone at the St. Louis County Jail was flush with money. A correctional officer at the intake facility at the St. Louis County Justice Center last week found $55,000 stuffed behind a toilet paper dispenser.

The bundle of money was in $100 and $50 bills, said Clayton Police Chief Thomas Byrne.

Officials interviewed inmates about the money, but none admitted knowing anything about the stashed cash.

The money was placed in a special bank account until the owner can be determined, Byrne said.

Stupid News - Woman sentenced for having son dress up as Scout

Stupid News - Hey people are getting desperate! This is no Enron!
Woman sentenced for having son dress up as Scout
EASTON, Pa. - A former Bethlehem woman will serve up to 23 months in prison for having her 7-year-old son dress as a Cub Scout to collect money for a nonexistent cause.

Sally Ann Gombocz, 51, told a Northampton County judge she wanted to apologize to anyone she hurt. She previously pleaded guilty to theft by deception and corruption of a minor.

Gombocz had her son dress as a scout in 2003 and tell people he was raising money for a camping trip. A prosecutor says the family collected $69.

Gombocz was sentenced Friday to six to 23 months in the county jail. She also was fined $2,000, ordered to perform community service, take parenting classes, have psychological counseling and submit to random urine screens. She also must pay restitution.

Stupid News - 'Darth Vader' spared jail in Jedi church attacks

Stupid News - 'Darth Vader' spared jail in Jedi church attacks
HOLYHEAD, Wales - A man who dressed up as Darth Vader, wearing a garbage bag for a cape, and assaulted the founders of a group calling itself the Jedi church was given a suspended sentence Tuesday.

Arwel Wynne Hughes, 27, attacked Jedi church founder Barney Jones — aka Master Jonba Hehol — with a metal crutch, hitting him on the head, prosecutors told Holyhead Magistrates' Court.

He also whacked Jones' 18-year-old cousin, Michael Jones — known as Master Mormi Hehol — bruising his thigh in the March 25 incident, prosecutors said.

The two cousins and Barney Jones' brother, Daniel, set up the Church of Jediism, Anglesey order, last year. Jedi is the faith followed by some of the central characters in the "Star Wars" films.

The group, which claims about 30 members, says on its Web site that it uses "insight and knowledge" from the films as "a guide to living a better and more worthwhile life."

"We all love the films and what they stand for. Obviously some people are going to laugh about it," the Wales on Sunday newspaper quoted Barney Jones as saying last month. "But a lot of people do take it seriously."

Unfortunately for Hughes, his March attack was recorded on a video camera that the cousins had set up to film themselves in a light saber battle.

"Darth Vader! Jedis!" Hughes shouted as he approached.

Hughes claimed he couldn't remember the incident, having drunk the better part of a 2 1/2-gallon (10-liter) box of wine beforehand.

"He knows his behavior was wrong and didn't want it to happen but he has no recollection of it," said Hughes' lawyer, Frances Jones.

District Judge Andrew Shaw sentenced Hughes to two months in jail but suspended the sentence for one year. He also ordered Hughes to pay $195 to each of his victims and $117 in court costs.

In the 2001 United Kingdom census, 390,000 — 0.7 percent of the population — listed Jedi as their religion.

By Stella Foster Sun-Times Columnist

Sean Levert, son of O’Jays lead singer Eddie Levert, was found dead in a Cleveland, Ohio, jail over the weekend, sources said.

Sean Levert, 39, was being held for allegedly failing to pay about $80,000 in child support. The cause of death was not immediately known.

Sean Levert was a member of the R&B group LeVert with his late brother Gerald Levert and Marc Gordon. Gerald Levert died Nov. 10, 2006 at the age of 40.

Sean Levert had recently completed an album with Gordon, sources said.

Newsnet5 Reports
CLEVLAND -- Sean Levert, the younger brother of R&B singer Gerald Levert and son of Eddie Levert of the O'Jays, died late Sunday night.

Levert, 39, died at 11:57 p.m. at Lutheran Hospital after being transported to the facility from the Cuyahoga County Jail. Sean Levert had gone to the jail infirmary complaining he was sick.

It was in November that Sean Levert started singing again. He talked with NewsChannel5 about finishing a project -- bringing the group back together -- that his brother started.

Gerald Levert died Nov. 10, 2006. He was found dead in his bed at his Newbury home.

"Sometimes I'll have my moments, but right now I think I'm in a happier stage thinking about the good times we had together," Sean Levert had said.

Gerald Levert started his career as the lead singer of the R&B trio Levert before pursuing a solo career.

That is crazy!

The brother of late crooner Gerald Levert sentenced to prison for not paying child support. Sean Levert from the group "Levert" will spend the next 22-months behind bars. Levert owes $86,000 in back child support for his three children - ages 11, 15 and 17. Levert was sentenced Monday by Judge Nancy Margaret Russo. He did not speak at his sentencing.
