Workshop: Parents taught how to pillow fight

pillowNew York - Forget about letting the kids run around unsupervised; we don’t even let them jump on the beds anymore. Between helicopter parents who hover, Tiger Moms who are obsessed with academic success, and curling parents who sweep a perfectly clear path for their kids to follow, we’re so worried about keeping our kids safe that we end up limiting their activity levels along with their independence. But a little horsing around could do kids a world of good, two experts suggest - and they encourage parents to roughhouse right along with their children. At a recent roughhousing workshop in New York, parents rolled around on mats with their children, hoisted them in the air, and took part in an energetic pillow fight.  More

Man arrested for playing checkers

james-slate
North Carolina - When Otis the town drunk goes to jail on “The Andy Griffith Show,” it always produces some comedic moments. But for a Mount Airy man who impersonates the familiar character, his real-life arrest for recently violating a city ordinance prohibiting sidewalk obstructions has been no laughing matter. James Slate, 63, was handcuffed, placed in a police car and hauled off to Dobson, where he had to wait about 45 minutes, part of the time in a holding cell, until his wife could come and post a $500 cash bond. He was taken into custody at Mayberry Country Store, his son’s business on North Main Street that is right beside Snappy Lunch, where Slate often sits outside and plays checkers with tourists.  More

Drivers shot in ‘bump and rob’ attacks

police1
West Palm Beach, Florida - There’s a new crime in town. It’s called the “bump and rob.” And local law enforcement is increasingly worried over drivers being victimized. So much so, they are warning Palm Beach County residents that if you are driving on the road between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. and another car bumps you from behind, do not get out of your car. “It’s very serious,” said Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Eric Davis. “We’re sending out warnings and tips because it is serious.” If someone is close to you at an ATM, don’t take money out. Go to a different ATM. If you feel like someone is following you, drive to a well-lit area. More
